      Hi Bambi,

I am Sarah Avery, and I am related to some Oklahoma Guthries. They arrived in Oklahoma from Ohio/Michigan and would all be related to Henry Charles Guthrie (1832-1910). I do not, however, recognize any of the names you posted on August 21, 2022.

According to the 1851 and 1861 Census of England, Alexander Guthrie was born about 1782. There is a baptism recorded for 28 Jan 1782 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland England for an Alexander Guthrie whose father was also named Alexander Guthrie. Mother’s name not listed in the register. This is the same location that your Alexander Guthrie married Margaret Bruce on 27 May 1799.Children were Robert, John, and possibly David. The latter’s marriage record listed witnesses Alexander and Robert Guthrie.

Alexander Guthrie shows up in the 1811 Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland directory as a tailor and habit maker. Margaret is most likely the Margaret Guthrie who died in Berwick, Northumberland, England in Oct-Nov-Dec of 1837. Alexander Guthrie appears to have remarried to a Mrs Ann Smith. Alexander and Ann are found in census and directories in later years for St James. In 1851, he is living in the Carr household in Newcastle with his stepdaughter Ann’s family. He is buried in Jesmond Old Cemetery in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His tombstone was erected by a grandson, Malcolm Guthrie, who appears to be a son of David Guthrie.

If the above is accurate, then your ancestor Alexander was born in England rather than Scotland, and about 1781-1782 rather than in 1777. His father Alexander was also noted to be a “taylor” (tailor/clothier). If the father was 20-40 years old at his son Alexander’s birth in 1781, his own DOB would be about 1741-1761. No idea if he was born in Scotland or England, but his death was most likely in Northumberland, England.
