Thank you for contacting Clan Guthrie! This is a much larger and more nuanced question that you might have guessed. The word “laird” itself can be a bit convoluted. Many definitions exist depending on if you are talking about the Guthries who were “landed” with the castle grounds, or one of the other Guthrie branches who rose to prominence in other areas. Laird, itself, is a courtesy title and holds no formal status within the laws of Scotland.
